What it's for

The Timing Desk's light tells you, at a glance, whether impulses from the timing device are being stored against the race and run you have picked, and whether the desk is handing them to racers. On the full desk it is the button on the window bar (LOCKED / RACE OPEN); on the simple layout it sits on the On course heading.

Before you start

  • A race and a run picked on the desk.
  • A timing device connected (see Timing devices).

How to read it

  • Red — LOCKED. Nothing is stored. An impulse that arrives now is not kept anywhere in Race Bureau; it stays only in the device's own memory.
  • Yellow — impulses only. Impulses are stored against the picked race and run, but they arrive with no number. Nobody is moved on course or into the finish; you give each impulse its bib.
  • Green — RACE OPEN. Impulses are stored and go to the next racer: the next to start goes on course on a start impulse, the first on course finishes on a finish impulse. Green keeps collecting even when you leave the desk for another tab.

One click moves the light: red → green, green → yellow, yellow → red. A double click on yellow opens the race. The light is per race and per run, never per event, and one race and run is open at a time on a window: opening another closes the first. Each timing window has its own light.

Which race and run the desk has picked, plus green or yellow at the moment the impulse arrives, decides where it lands. Nothing else does: not the device's clock, not a time zone, not another tab.

What success looks like

The light is green on the right race and run before the first competitor starts, and the first start impulse appears in Start impulses with the bib of the next to start.

If something goes wrong

  • Impulses were taken while the light was red: they are not in Race Bureau. The device still holds them; see Offline for the gap fill, which brings back only presses taken while the light was green.
  • A doubled bib is flagged with !. The desk never re-routes an impulse on its own; you decide.
  • The light is green but nothing arrives: check the device's dot in the Timing devices card, and that the device is assigned to this window.
